What is a Hackathon?
The Throw-a-thon is a competition to build the most exciting technology products, from mobile apps to games, in 48 hours. Products will be judge d by professionals in the tech industry. Check out this blog post by hackathon guru Dave Fontentot to learn more.

Throwathon Virtual Reality Challenge
This year, the Throw-a-thon has partnered with eeGeo. eeGeo is crafting the digital mirror of our world today; “EeGeo is setting out to revolutionize the digital mapping realm with a 3D representation of the world that’s geospatially accurate and includes detail down to the level of buildings — including interiors.”
In order to inaugurate the launch of Eegeo’s Virtual Reality SDK, you are invited to join the revolution. Using the Eegeo VR SDK, your objective is to create a killer application that demonstrates the potential of the platform.
Bring Location-Based Data into Virtual Reality
There are so many sources of locational-relevant data, and VR gives the opportunity to visualize this data in new ways. To compete in this track, bring your ideas involving mash up APIs, social media streams, or municipal datasets to create unique VR experiences.
Judging Criteria:
Scalability: How well does this work for any populous city in the world? Can it create a personalized experience for any person, any location? Does it need content curation, or does it just work out of the box?
Immersiveness: How well does this incorporate existing media into the 3D, how well is presence preserved during the experience?
Fun & Engaging: Is this more than just “Map Pins in VR?” Is there something unique?
Innovation: How does it innovate/refurbish in its industry?
Examples: Social Media & Geo APIs
Instagram’s 10 Most Popular Places in Each City
Curated, Geocoded 360 videos from YouTube with unique browse experience
Vine Stories: Auto-tour of all geocoded vines from a given user in the last 24 hours
Share a photo in context: A FB Messenger app that uses iOS ReplayKit to capture a “Photo Fly-in” as a video
London, San Francisco, New York, etc: many cities now offer a treasure trove of data. 3D and animations can be used to bring these datasets together to deliver new insights.
Mapillary: Crowd-sourced streetview images
Public Transit Information: Display live departures on bus stops or train stations
Hybrid Reality Gaming
We’ve built a massive world inside a game engine: the opportunities are endless. Use the real world as the base, and the following platform features:
Fun: It’s a game after all, and this matters a lot!
Accessible: Is this something that would appeal to more casual gamers?
Exploratory: Does this game allow the user to learn more about our amazing world and it’s people?
Going inside
We’ve created a lovely model of eeGeo’s office premises in Dundee Scotland. Our Virtual Westport House contains a real casino, grocery store, restaurant and flats; we’ve taken some liberties in creating a hotel, museum and showroom as well.
The challenge is to come up with compelling proof of concept experience that addresses the specific needs of a particular space, and its community. What can virtual reality do for these places? What problems can be solved uniquely with VR?
Groups will have virtual access to beacons on premises, as well as indoor positioning data within the eeGeo office via Cisco or Senion Labs SDKs.
Judging Criteria:
Scalability: How well does this work for any building? Does it require big, expensive systems, simple sensor, or just a phone? Does it need content curation, or does it just work out of the box?
Usefulness: Is it something that could be used by a lot of people, often? How indispensable is this? How painful is the pain point?
Clever & Engaging:
